Right after beginning to think about our advent calendar Elsie, at A Beautiful Mess, posted this tutorial. I love that it used items I had in abundance----scrapbook paper! I also picked up two different types of gift bags for super cheap at our local craft store for the "bigger" items. I had a variety of small gifts for the kids bought mostly from the dollar section ready to go. With three kids, I looked for items that came with more than one item or something they could do together. This year they are getting chocolate Santas, Chapstick, felt ornaments, crayons, pop rocks, and more. I also printed out a variety of activities that we have planned for the month. They went into smaller envelopes. The hardest part of the whole project was planning ahead for the month. Carving out pre-planned time is a must, but we have to be flexible too. All envelopes are sealed with washi tape so I can adjust activities later if needed!
I folded the scrapbook paper in half leaving a 1-2 inch piece at the top for the flap of the envelope. I then used my zig-zag stitch to sew down both side of the paper. Seal with a piece of washi tape and I was done!
I added a variety of date stickers that I had previously used for my December Daily scrapbooks.
I love the way it turned out and it looks perfect resting on top of our piano. The kids were super excited to see them all and the twins spent a good amount of time practicing their numbers as they searched for them all. They opened up day one (candy cane pop rocks) yesterday and are eager to see what is in day two.
This is one tradition that I'm always glad I take the time to put together. It's an easy way to get the kids to mark the passing time and get them excited for the big day!
