Since my last What's For Dinner post I haven't had much of a chance to try anything new. We've had a busy couple of weeks and when that happens it's easiest to stick to our tried and true favorites. Here is one discovery though: my kids are in that crazy group that doesn't like hamburgers. Earlier this week I cooked up turkey burgers and sweet potato fries and there was a kid wide revolt. They went to bed quite hungry, but made up for it in the morning with double breakfast. I've decided to take it out of rotation for a while. Maybe this summer when Mark gets a grill, they'll change their minds.
I did pick up a couple of new cookbooks.
Let me warn you know that the Joy the Baker cookbook is full of sinfully yummy looking treats. It is not for the dieter or sweet-hater. I can't wait to try a few things out! The Family Dinner is not only a great cookbook, but it has a lot of tips on how to include kids in the process of dinnertime. It's all about slowing down, savoring each other and connecting with your kids. I can't wait to dive into this one more and have Mia become more involved. She's my pickiest eater and although she still may not eat a bite, giving her some ownership over dinner can't be a bad idea.
This morning a storm rolled through and I finished off the last bit of homemade granola. I went ahead and made another double batch using Jaime Oliver's recipe that is in the Food Revolution cookbook. I love that I can make it my own by adding the nuts and seeds that we like. It made the house smell divine. Also, by picking up most of the ingredients from the bulk section of a local health food store a double batch cost me 16$. It'll last about two weeks and that's a pretty good deal for me. I've been sprinkling about a 1/4 of a cup over honey Noosa and sliced strawberries. Yum!
I do have one new recipe on the board to try this week. It's Taco Soup and you can find at Lettered Cottage. I'm always looking for a good soup, especially when it gets chilly! We've got a warm spell coming up so it may be the last soup for a while!
